Who We Are

We are a steel design and welding engineering consulting firm based in Atlantic Canada. We provide technical services for industrial and commercial steel fabricators and erectors. Our engineers have direct work experience in various roles for steel fabricators ranging from estimating to project management, shop drawings, connection design, and general management - we understand the industry as well as the needs and challenges of our clients.

Our Services

Welding Engineering
We serve clients as the professional engineers responsible for welding practice for certification to CSA W47.1 (steel) and CSA W47.2 (aluminum) standards. We also prepare WPS's to AWS (American Welding Society) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) standards. Materials include, but are not limited to, mild to quenched and tempered steels, aluminum, stainless steel, nickel alloys, and chrome molybdenum plate and pipe.

Steel and Connection Design
We specialize in providing structural design services for the commercial and industrial space, with a focus on steel and connection design. Our services include steel connection design and shop drawing reviews for clients across Canada. Our team has expertise in designing with various types of steel, including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. With our specialized knowledge and experience, we provide tailored solutions to meet our clients' unique needs.

Training and Workshops
We provide technical training for welders, welding supervisors, engineers, technicians, detailers, and managers. We offer the following workshops, both in-person and online, upon request.

We are a dedicate team of experienced engineers, inspectors, and administrators, all working towards a common goal of providing high quality technical solutions in conjunction with our clients. We maintain professional registrations in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. All members of our team are committed to expanding our knowledge through continuous training so that our clients stay current on any standards updates and industry trends.
Chris Pitre, P.Eng., MBA
Chris is the president of Skarborn Engineering and has expertise in welding engineering, steel fabrication, site services and inspection. As a former owner and general manager of multiple fabrication shops, he is always eager to share his experience and best practices to help clients achieve their objectives.
Kyle Girouard, P.Eng.
Kyle is the vice president of Skarborn Engineering and has expertise in steel and connection design, welding engineering, and shop fabrication. He has worked as a connection designer for numerous projects ranging from heavy industrial work to large international airports.
Stig Skarborn, P.Eng., IWE
Stig is the company founder and continues to serve as Skarborn Engineering’s principal engineer and technical advisor. His expertise in welding engineering, steel design, inspection, and training has spanned over 50 years in the industry. He also has unique expertise in the design of dock and harbour facilities for ferry terminals and commercial shipping. Stig is the recipient of the prestigious CWA Michael N. Vuchnich Award for his role in the advancement of arc welding applications throughout Canada. His energy and willingness to share his knowledge with others will have an impact on countless people in the welding community for years to come.
Susan Guravich, P.Eng., IWE, PHD
Susan has been with Skarborn Engineering for 30 years and continues to serve as principal engineer and advisor. Her expertise is in welding engineering, design, and inspection. She is an industry leader in aluminum design and is a member of the CSA S6 bridge code technical committee for aluminum bridges (Section 17). Susan also served as technical advisor for aluminum design research at the University of Waterloo.
Rosemary Pitre
Rosemary is Skarborn Engineering's office and accounting manager. Her dedication to our clients’ needs is key to our operations.
Terry Leblanc, CSA W178.2, Level 3
Terry is an experienced inspector for both steel and aluminum structures. Prior to joining Skarborn Engineering, he served for many years as a customer service representative for the Canadian Welding Bureau. His expertise in welding equipment, welding consumables, procedure testing, and shop practices, allow opportunity for our clients improve their operations.
